Does Uganda Have Internet?

Uganda internet access has been steadily increasing, but significant challenges remain. As of 2023, only about 24% of Ugandans had access to the internet. The majority of these users are concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural regions — where most of Uganda’s population resides and where many schools are located — with little to no connectivity. This disparity significantly affects access to information and educational opportunities.

• Teacher resources. Teachers can also benefit from online professional development courses and teaching resources, which can help them improve their teaching methods and stay updated with the latest educational trends.

• 21st-century skills. On today’s social and job search platforms as well as in the job market, digital literacy is a critical skill. With improved Wi-Fi connectivity in schools, students can develop essential digital skills that will prepare them for lucrative future employment opportunities. Qualifying for higher-paying jobs that require these skills can help young people lift themselves, their families, and entire communities out of poverty.

Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide

• Equity in education. The digital divide between urban and rural areas exacerbates educational inequalities.
